COMICS

Essay topics:

“COMICS”

The reading and the lecture both talk about uniquely America's art of comics. The reading states that “comic medium” was popular and made in America and spread worldwide. Meanwhile, the speaker clarified some points that the lecture claimed. The lecturer claimed that Hogan's Alley was the first commercially successful comic strip released in 1890, which the speaker contradicted by claiming that in Britain and Switzerland, released the first strip comic book in 1790, and was not Hogan's Alley. The speaker said that after many studies have been done, researchers agreed that comic books are not originally from America and either written or drawn for Americans.

Primarily, according to the reading. It stated that the first superhero action comic book Spiderman was created in America and popular in the world in 1938. However, the lecturer disputes this point. Furthermore, the lectures claimed that the first series action comic was released in Belgium in 1922, which the character was The Adventures of TinTin and predated Superman in popularity. Also, the lecture noted that the artist of Superman is originally from Canada and not from the United States.

Secondly, the reading states that the American were the first who exported and invented the unique art form of comic strips, which were introduced in Japan after World War II. Moreover, Japanese comics were inspired by American comics. Also, claimed that European series comics such as Smurfs and Asterix were induced by American Disney comic books. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. The lecture argues that Japanese comic books' were traditionally influenced by Asian art and not American. Also, the lecture points out that the Smurfs and Asterix were written and drawn in the uniquely European style.

Finally, the speaker claims that the unique art of “comic medium” does not belong to America, it belongs to the whole world.
