Essay topics:

Eco certification and American wood companies (Integrated)

Reading Section:

In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resources and recycling materials. Companies that receive this certification can attract customers by advertising their products as Eco certified. Around the world, many wood companies have adopted new, ecologically friendly practices in order to receive Eco certification. However, it is unlikely that wood companies in the United States will do the same, for several reasons.

First, American consumers are exposed to so much advertising that they would not value or even pay attention to the Eco certification label. Because so many mediocre products are labeled 'new" or improved,'' American consumers do not place much trust in advertising claims in general.

Second, Eco certified wood will be more expensive than uncertified wood because in order to earn Eco certification, a wood company must pay to have its business examined by a certification agency. This additional cost gets passed on to consumers-American consumers tend to be strongly motivated by price, and therefore they are likely to choose cheaper uncertified wood products. Accordingly, American wood companies will prefer to keep their prices low rather than obtain Eco certification

Third, although some people claim that it always makes good business sense for American companies to keep up with the developments in the rest of the world, this argument is not convincing. Pursuing certification would make sense for American wood companies only if they marketed most of their products abroad. But that is not the case—American wood businesses sell most of their products in the United States, catering to a very large customer base that is satisfied with the merchandise.

The lecture disagrees with the points made in the reading passage about the issue of providing sustainable forestry by conserving the resources and recycling materials and using the ecocertification.
First of all, the passage points out that since US citizens have been exposed to too many advertisements, they do not put enough value or attention to such advertisements. However, the lecture mentions that nowadays, Americans do not treat the all the advertisements the same way. They have the ability to distinguish the difference and have trust in the independent consumer agencies and will be able to show caution to the advertisements made by those agencies.
Secondly, the lecture counterpoints the passage, which assumes that because getting business examination for the ecocertification is quite expensive and is up to the consumers to pay the price, they would tend to purchase cheaper products that are not ecocertified. The lecture explains that while it is true that the consumers care about the price, this is only the case when they are comparing between competing products. If the difference in price is small, they would choose based on factors other than price, such as whether the product has been certified to be ecofriendly.
Last but not least, while the reading passage claims that the companies are not convinced to why they should pursue the ecocertification, the lecture asserts that the companies in America do pay attention to preserving the forestry not because they should appeal to international consumers, but because they should compete with the foreign competitors. The Americans nowadays tend to purchase products that received the ecocertification and would focus on companies that are ecofriendly.
While the reading passage claims that the US will fail in using and pursuing the ecocertification to preserve the forestry, the lecture makes a promising assertion with reasonable proofs to disagree with the passage and claims that Americans and the US companies would successfully exploit the ecocertification.
