Integrated TPO 34

The article brings three reasons to prove the main cause of sea cow extinction in 1768. Nonetheless, the professor puts those theories under question. According to the professor, we do not know what exactly caused the extinction of this type of animal, which will be discussed in the following.

The first argument brought by the article is that Siberian people overhunted see cows because this animal is a good source of food in a harsh environment. This could be the main reason for their extinction. However, the lecturer asserts that sea cows are so massive, e.g. 10 tons, while the population of Siberian people was not that big. Therefore, Siberian people did not need to hunt sea cows too much and this reason brought for their extinction is not quite convincing.

Another theory raised by the article is that the ecosystem disturbance caused a decline in the type of plant called kelp, which is the main source of food for sea cows. As a result, this reduction in food supply caused their extinction. In contrast, the professor makes the point that when ecological changes happen, not only kelp but also other plants and marine animals would get affected, but the population of wales and other plants had not declined. Therefore, no food shortage occurred for sea cows.

The final contradiction between the article and the lecturer is whether European fur traders who came to Island for hunting are the cause of the extinction of sea cows. The article states that it is recorded that traders caught the last sea cow in 1768. On the contrary, the professor argues that fur traders could not be responsible for the disaster because the population of sea cows had declined about 100 years before they came to the Island. As such, the third reason is not acceptable either.
