The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is some beliefs about elephants, amazing creatures in our era which live in herds and are indigenous to Asia and Africa. Although the reading mentions three main beliefs about these enormous animals, the lecturer finds them unrealistic and misunderstanding of the facts and provides some counter reasons to refute them all.

First of all, the reading states that elephants know when they are going to die and tend to break away from their herd and approach water bodies known as their "graveyards". However, the lecturer denies this fact, expressing that the elephants do not go toward such areas just because of getting alone there. They actually have a practical reason to go near the lakes of rivers. Their ability to chew their normal vegetation diet would be lower due to having old teeth, thus, they prefer to utilize softer plants which excessively grow near the bodies of water. Therefore, when they end up dying near water, their areas are named "graveyards".

Furthermore, the author presents the idea of their ability of sketching some recognizable art pieces. The lecturer, on the other hand, mentions strict instructors who train the elephants how to hold the brush by their trunk and tutor them how to paint some lines to be recognizable are responsible of their artistic sense, while the elephants do not understand any of those sketches and they are all learned

Eventually, the reading mentions the elephants' fear of mice, small mammals rather than tigers or lions has been accepted for a long time. In contrast, according to the lecturer, the reaction they have in front of mice is not due to their fear, but it is because the mice are unknown creatures by elephants which is an natural instinct to elephants to find unfamiliar animals as a treat to themselves. She also adds that elephants in zoos do not show such a behavior while confronting mice which means that no longer mice will jeopardize elephants' life.
