Essay topics:

The Plain of Jars is an archaeological site in the Southeast Asian country of Laos. At the site, hundreds of large stone jars, ranging in size from one to three meters, are scattered across the countryside These numerous large containers are around 2,000 years old. The original purpose of the jars is unknown, but archaeologists have several theories.
First; the jars may have been used for fermentation. In fermentation, food or drink is left in a sealed container in order to undergo a chemical change According to some local residents, the jars were originally constructed by a king in order to ferment a special beverage to celebrate a great victory It would be possible to use the jars for fermentation, so the local people's story could be true.
Second, the jars may have been used for water storage. Laos experiences rainy and dry seasons, and finding water during the dry seasons can be difficult. The Plain of Jars is located near ancient trade routes, where traveling traders may have needed drinking water. The jars could have been constructed to collect water during the rainy season so that traders passing through the area would have a source of drinking water during the dry season.
Third, it is possible that the Plain of Jars was an ancient burial site, and the jars were tombs (places where human remains are deposited). Much of the contents of the ancient jars are now gone, but they are large enough to hold human remains. Furthermore, artifacts such as metal tools, jewelry, and glass beads have been found in some of the jars. Burying the dead alongside valuable artifacts was a common practice in ancient cultures. Ancient people may have buried their dead in the jars along with the artifacts

The reading and lecture are about the use of jars found in the archaeological sites. While the author of the reading feels that these jars were used for the purpose of fermentation, water storage, and burial as tombs; the lecture refutes each of the claims made in the reading passage and saying that it is mysterious and uncertain till now.
To begin with, the reading says that in accordance with native people, these jars were used by the local king, to ferment, during the time of celebration on triumph. The lecturer challenges a claim made by the author. He mentions that during that period there was avail of clay jars, which is less expensive and requires time for its preparation. As a result, the king would use clay jars instead of stone jars. He also tells that this clay jars effectiveness is the same as of the stone jars.
On the same note, the writer argues that these jars were used for the storing of water during scarce conditions. It also elaborates that this place lies in traveling routes, consequently, people who traveled have used for the purpose of drinking. On the contrary, the speaker opposes it by contending that this site was found nearby rivers and streams. According to him," when there is a source of water near the location of jars, there would not require any type of storage facilities."
Finally, the author posits that these jar has been used for burying of dead bodies by making of tombs, which is the size in relation to human beings. The professor, on the other hand, opposes that although it is a large size, it does not contain any cover on it the site or nearby it. He discusses that it would be unlikely to use a burial unless there is a cover.
