The reading and the lecture are both about Pluto, which is believed to be one of the planets in the solar system. The author of the reading believes that Pluto lost membership in the solar system. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that it didn’t lose membership in the solar system.
First of all, the author points out that Pluto is no longer counted as a planet in the solar system. It is mentioned that this decision was made among scientists after voting in the International Astronomical Union conference. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says excluding Pluto from the solar system started a big conflict among scientists which was called Pluto war. Furthermore, she argues that voting was based on ten percent of all astronomical union members because five hundred astronomers presented from ten thousand astronomers.
Secondly, the author contends that the size of Pluto was estimated to be similar to the earth size. The article notes that later discovered the size of Pluto was smaller than the earth’s moon and other moons. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that many scientists believed that if an object clears its orbit then it is a planet. she elaborates on this by mentioning that Earth, Mars, Neptune, and Jupiter have asteroids as neighbors, so they can not clear their orbit but they are a planet.
Finally, the author states that reclassifying Pluto honors the fact IUC's decision "science is self-correcting”. The article establishes that new children wouldn't know that Pluto was one of the solar systems. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that IUC's decision disappointed many people. She puts forth the idea that children wouldn't forget about Pluto because thirteen of the march was nominated Pluto’s day.
