TOEFL TPO 10 - Integrated Writing Task

The reading passage suggests that the most influenced factor for the dramatic decrease of the sea other population is environmental pollution and provides three arguments with it. On the other hand, the lecturer disagrees with the ideas presented in the reading, she thinks it mostly impacted by the predators and casts doubt each of the author's idea.

First and foremost, the article claims that there are many sources exist along the Alaskan coast that causes pollution such as oil rigs and other industrial chemical pollution. However, the professor made a counterclaim to this idea by explaining that there is no evidence of dead otter found in a beach which is consistent with the theory of the predators rather than the pollution. According to her, because the predators eat the body of otter immediately, there is nothing left.

Secondly, the reading contends that the population of other species also declining such as seals and sea lions which can be only caused by the huge animals like an orca, but its diet mostly depends on the other whales. Nevertheless, the lecturer argued that the because of the humans, the whales disappeared in most areas. She also said that this causes the orca to change their diet from big whales to the small sea animals such as otter, sea lions and seals in order to not starve.

Thirdly and finally, the passage indicates that the population of the otter is uneven by the areas which can be explained by the theory of pollution. In contrast, the professor made a rejection to this point by saying that this could be better explained by the attacks of predators. Moreover, she said that in places which is not accessible for the orcas to live such as shallow watered areas, is the places where the population of the otter is relatively stable.
