TOEFL TPO 43 - Integrated Writing Task
Reading passage presents three different theory about how agnostids may have lived. However, the professor in the listening claims that each of three theories have weakness and she provides three evidences to support her idea.
Firstly, reading passage says agnostids may have been free-swimming predators that feed on smaller animals because other types of primitive arthropods were strong swimmers and active predators. On the contrary, the professor indicates that free-swimming predators usually have large well developed eyes and have good vision, but agnostids have weak sight or maybe even blind. Also, there are no fossil evidences show that agonostids have special sensor. Thus, agnostids are not free-swimming predators.
Secondly, the reading passage asserts that agonstids may have dwelled on the seafloor due to the existence of other types of primitive arthropods living in this way. According to the passage, seafloor dwellers are not able to move fast and usually occupy small areas. This contradicts the fact that, according to professor, agonstids live in mutigeographic areas and can move fast. Hence, agonstids are not seafloor dwellers.
Thirdly, the reading passage believes that agonstids may could be parasites, beacuse there are many speies of modern-day arthropods that exist as parasites. On the other hand, professor says that population of parasites are very limited so it won't kill their hosts, which contradicts the fact that agonstids have large population. In conclusion, agonstids can't be parasites.
