The given passage and the lecture is a discussion about "great houses" of Chaco Canyon who were settlers in Southwest America in twelfth century A.D. The given passage suggests three possible theories of archaeologists explaining the significance of Chaco structures which are massive stone buildings capable of accommodating a huge number of people. But the lecture here contends these theories.

The first theory suggests that Chaco structures were used for residential purposes because of their similarity with large residential apartment buildings. The lecture, however, refutes this theory with the fact that ratio of fireplaces to rooms in Chaco structures is not compatible for their use as residential buildings.

The second theory claims that the Chaco structures possibly could have been used for storage of grain maize. Since grain doesn't perish in a short duration and can be stored. On the other hand, the lecturer points out to the fact that if maize was stored in these Chaco structures, then we should have evidence for that in the form grain maize traces or storage containers.

The third theory indicates the use of Chaco structures as a Ceremonial Center. Discovery of a pile of old material close to Pueblo Alto ( Chaco structure) containing pots supports this theory. The lecture refutes this theory by stating that this pile of material contains other materials such as sand, stone, construction material. This clearly indicates that the pots recovered from this pile were used by construction workers, not during the ceremonies.
