TPO-08 - Integrated Writing Task Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including ki

The reading and the lecture are both about Chevalier's memoir, which consider a valuable because of his interviews with famous people like kings and writers. Although, the author mentions three episodes to show the inaccuracy of his memoir, the speaker casts doubt on all episodes mentioned in the reading. She says that no memoir is accurate at all, but Chevalier's memoir is overall accurate.

First of all, the author of the reading states that while Chevalier mentioned in his memoir that he was very wealthy by spending his money on parties and gambling, there is a recent evidence showed that he borrowed some money. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes this example by saying that Chevalier was indeed very rich and when he wanted to sell his property, he had to wait many days for his money to arrive, therefore he had to borrow some money.

Second, the writer casts doubt on the accuracy of his memoir with the famous writer Voltaire because it was written many years after the conversation happened. On the other side, the professor explains that Chevalier wrote down every thing he remembered about the conversation each night in a small note. She elaborates on this by clarifying that he kept these notes for years and used them to write down his memoir.

Third, the author claims that Chevalier's story when he escaped from the prison in Venice by making a hole in the ceiling is hard to believe, and he mentioned that to make his memoir more interesting to his readers. Furthermore, the author mentioned that Chevalier had known a lot of politics who could bribed jailers to escape him. The lecturer illustrates this point by mentioning that a lot of prisoners with Chevalier were more powerful than his and they could not escape. She puts forth the idea that an old governmental document has showed that the ceiling of his room in the prison had to be repaired, which confirms Chevalier's story.
