TPO-15 - Integrated Writing Task The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers' crops by eating harmful insec

The reading provides three methods to get rid of cane toads in Australia. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that the mentioned measures are not efficient and conversely can cause even more damage to the environment.

First of all, the author talks about structuring a national fence, that would isolate and prevent toads from spreading to new areas. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that the young and the eggs of cane toads are usually can be found in rivers so eventually, they will move to the other side by water flow.

Secondly, propose that volunteers could gather and destroy toads, as they can be easily seen and catch. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that people have little knowledge and can catch native frogs instead of cane toads because they look very similar and it is hard to the untrained eye to see the difference.

Finally, the author states that a virus could be developed to stop the cane toad population from spreading. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that this virus will cause danger to the cane toads in Central and North America, where they are considered as native animals and play important role in the ecosystem. He elaborates on this by mentioning that many toads are transferred from Australia to America by scientist or pet collectors and if the spice has a virus it will infect other ones.
