TPO-26 - Integrated Writing Task The zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of North America. There are reasons to believe that this invasion cannot b

Unlike the passage, which claims that the invasion of zebra mussel is unstoppable and provides three reasons, the lecture opposes this opinion and he says there are many ways to control zebra mussel's spread, unlike the past; it should not represent series threat

First of all, the writer suggests that zebra mussel could attach easily to the bottom of any ship crossing Europe's waterway towards to North America. The speaker says that is true if the ship empty out the water when it reaches North America, but it the ships are required to empty out this water and refill again from the ocean water while it out, the salt water of the ocean will kill the zebra mussel.

Secondly, the professor refuses the idea mentioned in the article, which suggests that zebra mussel dominates because there are now predators, high rate of reproduction. He explains that this could be in the beginning, but in Europe new aquatic birds were attracted to zebra mussel and take it as a food source for them by switching from whatever they eat to zebra mussel. He puts forth the idea that birds can eat a lot of zebra mussel, and by this way it creates natural predators, and unlikely to be dominant.

Thirdly, the professor explains that it might be true that zebra mussel eat plankton, which has negative impact on fish population because it represents source of food for fish population, but He mentions that it has positive effect too. He elaborates on this by mentioning that zebra mussel generates nutrients that feed bottom fish population, therefore, the bottom fish population will increase, even if the plankton eaten fish decreased.
