TPO-31 - Integrated Writing Task A fossil skeleton of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx, preserved in volcanic ash, was discovered in Liaoning, China, in 1996. Interestingly, the fossil included a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones. Some

The reading passage and lecture have conflicting opinions about whether Sinosauropteryx which was dinosaur found in China had feathers. The article strongly postulates that there is no possibility that it had feathers because of three compelling reasons. On the other hand, the listening adamantly delineates that none of the author's assumptions is plausible.

First and foremost, according to the professor in the lecture, this fine lines which founded from this dinosaur's skeleton could not be created by decomposition. this is mainly due to the fact that it was proved that the relics were well-preserved for centuries. In other words, other animals' fossils which were also founded in the same site indicated that they all in good situations. Nonetheless, the author offsets these points by declaring that fine lines function represented that they emerged after the animal's death. To be more specific, the animal's body was buried in volcanic ash and it decayed into fibres.

On top of this, the lecturer further asserts that its ornaments and feather had both distinct chemical compositions. For instance, feather has a great amount of essential protein named cretan, while its decorations do not compose of such chemicals. Hence, it clearly demonstrates that the fine lines could not be the animal's frills. These claims refute the writer's implications about researchers can not explain exactly where these lines placed on this animal's body, thus it might be ruffles of such an animal.

Lastly, the speaker in the lecture suggests that some birds have feathers to attract their mates which is called display function. Moreover, the scientist found that this dinosaur had orange and white feathers on their backbone and a tail like a peacock. thus, the above evidence clearly illustrates that the animal has used their feathers to appeal to their grooms. Nevertheless, the article counters these indications by insisting that if this animal used their furs normally, they might have been utilised as flight and regulating its internal temperature. However, the lines represent that it was located in its backbone and tail. Therefore, this structure was useless for this animal because its position definitely restricted its flight and thermoregulation.
