Based on the given material, the lecture, as well as the reading passage, discuss the authority of three hypotheses about the purpose of four thousand years old carved balls found in Scotland. The reading passage provides three theories to explain their viable functions. That been said, the lecturer repudiates these claims.
First, the author says that the carved balls were used as weapons to hunt or to fight due to the holes in them, which were functioned to swing and throw the balls. On the other hand, the lecturer claims that if the balls had been used as weapons, they should have cracked or broken surfaces. So they did not have fighting intentions.
Second, the writer proclaims that the balls had the measuring application and were used to weight quantities of grain or other food for the purpose of trade, owing to the fact that they have virtually uniform size and were interchangeable. Yet again, the speaker asserts that although the balls are of similar size, the mass of the balls varied a lot due to the different types of stones of which they were carved, such as sandstone or greenstone. The lecturer continues with an example of a handful of feathers and a handful of stones which have similar sizes but different masses.
The final point of contention between the lecture and the reading passage is about the function of marking different social classes. The writer declares that some balls have elaborated designs and served a social purpose to mark the great social status of their owners. However, the lecturer proclaims that since none of the balls has been found in graves, they could not have been used to emphasize social classes, owing to the fact that the people who used these balls, buried high-ranked persons with their possessions. Thus, it is not plausible that the balls were social markers.
