TPO-40 - Integrated Writing Task Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would

The reading and the lecture discuss the possibility to make Venus a hospitable place for humanity. The author believes that the extreme conditions of Venus will not keep human lives. The professor brings into question the claims made in the article. He considers that despite being challenging to accommodate people in this place, this is possible.

First, the author comes up with the idea that the atmospheric pressure makes this planet really difficult to land on with a pressure 90 times greater than the earth’s. However, the lecturer argues that there is a possibility to have a floating station 50km above the surface which will equal the earth’s atmospheric pressure, solving the problem to crash with the surface.

Second, the author states that as in Venus there are some chemical gases such as CO2 or H2S3 which contain little amounts of oxygen or water vapor –indispensable to live. So, humans would need to import oxygen and water from the earth which would make it even more difficult to live there. Meanwhile, the professor rebuts this argument pointing out that a possible solution would be to create chemical oxygen and water vapor since the existing chemicals in Venus, therefore, he believes that we would not need to import those necessarily.

Third, the author contends that less than 40 percent of sunlight reaches the surface of Venus because it is greatly reflected in the space and blocked by a Co2 layer. Then, without sunlight, it would not be impossible to generate electricity by solar energy. The professor, on the other hand, posits that as the station would 50km above, there would be less blocking clouds and a thinner Co2 layer, as a result of this, the upcoming sunlight will be enough to generate power to the station.
