The reading asserts that glass windows have caused birds to be harmed because they will try to through it and proposes three solutions to prevent this problem. However, the speaker claims that none of these solutions won't effectively stop the birds from flying through the glass windows and refutes each of them.

First, the author argues that regular glass should be replaced by one-way glass that people behind the window can see outside, but birds from the outside cannot see the inside. On the other hand, the lecturer states that one-way glass acts as a mirror, which is as bad as regular glass. This is because one-way glass reflexes the radiation of light so that it may reflect the sky or a tree. Thus, birds that cannot understand the concept of reflection will try to fly through them.

Second, the reading passage says that the glass windows can be designed by thin stripes so that birds avoid them. On the contrary, the professor contends that birds from the outside see the spaces between stripes as holes and will fly through them. Although designers can increase the width of stripes to make spaces between them extremely small, in this case, inside of the building will be too dark.

Third, the author avers that engineers can create an artificial magnetic field to guide the birds away because birds can sense magnetic fields to navigate their path. Conversely, the speaker posits that birds only use magnetic fields for navigation in long distances. For instance, if birds want to migrate from a cold country to a warmer one, they will use magnetic fields for navigation. But for short distances like flying from one side of the street to another side, they will use their eyes.
