TPO-42 - Integrated Writing Task Glass is a favored building material for modern architecture, yet it is also very dangerous for wild birds. Because they often cannot distinguish between glass and open air, millions of birds are harmed every year when the

Although the author provides three main ideas in order to stop harming wild birds flying through glass windows used in modern buildings, the professor finds these ideas dubious and brings up three counterclaims to refute them all.

Firstly, the author mentions that it would be a great idea to use one-way glass which acts as an impediment for birds. However, the professor asserts that using such glasses would reflect the objects and act as mirror. For instance, birds cannot distinguish between real tree and sky since these glasses perform as mirror and they directly fly through them.

Furthermore, the author claims that making use of colorful design instead of common windows protects birds from being injured. On the other hand, the professor gainsays this idea and states that designing windows might be a good idea since there would be unpainted spaces left on the surface of the glass or at least small parts of the surface remain unpainted because birds think that these free spaces are holes and they tend to fly inside them. In addition, the room inside the building would be so dark and act as holes.

Eventually, the reading passage takes the view that emitting artificial magnetic signals by some powerful equipment would interfere their natural sense of navigation and get them away from windows. The professor, in contrast, casts doubt on this issue and says that birds use their navigational sense when they tend to travel long distances, not short trips across the cities. For example, when they migrate before winter arrives, they use earth magnetic field to find best direction towards the warmer areas.
