TPO-47 - Integrated Writing Task Pterosaurs were an ancient group of winged reptiles that lived alongside the dinosaurs. Many pterosaurs were very large, some as large as a giraffe and with a wingspan of over 12 meters. Paleontologists have long wondered

Pterosaurs were a group of ancient animals which were winged reptiles. Whether they were capable of powered flight or not has been a topic of controversy among different scientists. The reading passage indicates some reasons that pterosaurs were able only to glide. The lecturer, nonetheless, throws doubts on all reasons presented in the reading passage and refute them all.
First, the author argues that pterosaurs were cold-blooded. Because, they belonged to reptile family and all reptiles are cold-blooded. Cold-blooded animals have slow metabolism and they don't have enough energy for powered flight. Conversely, the lecturer thinks that according to some fossils, pterosaurs had a dense hair like fur which could help them in powered flight. Pterosaurs used dense hairs in cold weather.
Furthermore, the reading passage highlights that pterosaurs were large animals and they couldn't flap their wings fast enough for powered flight. The speaker, on the contary, claims that there are some anatomical reasons that their body were light enough for flying. Because they had hallow in their bones which reduced their weight.
Finally, the author brings up the idea that large pterosaurs couldn't take off from ground. Because they were too heavy and their muscles were small and weak. In contrast, the professor thinks that they used four limes for take off and they didn't have any problem with their weight during take off by using this method. Some birds use their four limes for take off now.
