TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: the

The lecture and a reading passage both are talking about how the humpback whales travel long distances for hunting and mating by looking at the stars, but with different perspectives. The professor refutes each of the author’s view by giving solid reasons.

Firstly, the professor claims that there is no connection between the whales’ cognitive brain function and their ability to use stars for their journey. Here the professor gives an example of a duck, which possesses an average intelligence, does not show the connection between having a complex brain and the ability to transfer. It is because as such birds are just born with such abilities and having natural instincts to do so and hence this is true for the humpback whales too. This point is just opposite to what is explained in the reading passage. The passage says that humpback whales are highly intelligent and use cognitive skills to travel.

Secondly, the professor posits that to travel for long distances in a straight line requires some external object like any external force can do this and the professor believes that this force can be an earth’s magnetic force. So the humpback whales should have such magnetic in the body and because of this force, they can travel for a long journey. This view is opposite the reading passage view which says that stars at night provide external sights to these whales to travel for a long span.

Thirdly, the professor says that whale’s unusual spy hoping behavior is not responsible for star navigation and a long distance travel. He tells that sharks do have such behavior which they use to hunt their prey. And whales do such behavior even in the absence of stars in the sky. So this way, according to the professor there is no connection between the spy hopping behavior and long distance travel by humpback whales. On the other hand, the reading claims that the whales use this behavior to get information for their journey.
