TPO-52. Integrated Writing Task. Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.

The reading states that an asteroid would be the best option to colonize, while the professor in the lecture asserts that colonization on an asteroid has many downsides as well.

Firstly, the reading believes that because the asteroid has relatively lower gravity due to its smaller size, the craft won't be pulled as strongly toward the asteroid's surface. Thus, it's safer to land on it than to land on Moon. However, the professor views the issue from an opposite angle. According to him, there are some risks about the lower gravity. People are more likely to get health problems such as suffering from muscle loss and lower bone density. The astronomers would get their muscle weak when staying on the spaceship just for a few months, let alone we being on an asteroid permanently.

Secondly, the reading claims that there are a large amount of valuable elements and precious metals on the asteroid which are in dearth on Earth. So if we can mine those elements and metals, it is profitable. Whereas the professor opposes the statement by saying that the costs of mining and transporting these materials back to earth would be so high that the profit could be quite minimal. Furthermore, if there are a large amount of precious minerals on the asteroid, the supply of them will increase, which will cause the decline of the valuable metals' price. So it may not be profitable.

Finally, the reading argues that there are a number of asteroids that come within Earth's orbit closer than Moon, which leads to the fact that it would be much more convenient and less expensive to get to and back from it. On the contrary, in accordance with the professor, the view doesn't hold water. It's because the asteroid may move away from the earth though they can be closer to the earth once. They may not stay close like the Moon which keeps itself on its orbit and go away, then it will be a challenge to get back to the Earth.
