TPO 53 Integrated Writing Tasks

In this set of materials, the reading passage mainly discusses about increasing cigarettes taxes and also junk foods for some reason such as discouraging smokers, their medical costs, and benefits could be gotten by government buy this policy, while in the listening passage the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the text.

First of all, in the reading passage, it is clearly stated that increasing taxes of cigarette and unhealthy food could discourage smokers and someone who do not care about their health, however the professor believes that this policy could not useful. She claims that it can lead smokers to use cheaper cigarette with lower qualities, thus they take more risk about their health and also it is the same for junk foods user who have to pay more money to this foods and as a result they do not have enough money to buy healthy ones.

In addition, the professor disagrees with this idea that smokers make unnecessary medical costs for all the society. She points out that unfortunately smokers continue using unhealthy products but this policy could put more pressure on poor people than wealthy ones, therefor it is not fair.

Finally, although in the text it is mentioned that this policy could be a good way to increase the governments income which could be spent for public needs such as building a library or a stadium, the professor subscribes to this view that the government will be inclined to gain more money and maybe it will encourage people to use cigarette in outdoor and also in private places.
