The main idea of both passage and the lecture is about whether the government should invest on railway or not. with this in mind, the author mentions that there is some critics about this decision and provides three of them as to support its attitude toward the problem. The lecture, on the contrary, categorically refutes all evidences and explains that this investment is essential and beneficial for all the people and supports its standpoint by elaborating more details for each reason.
First, both reading and listening discuss the idea of whether spending money is a wast or not. In this vein, the passage puts forth the idea of total amount of huge bulk of government money required for maintaining the service in contrast with the income from passengers which is low. This process can be offered to private services to reduce costs. The lecture, on the other hand, states that its silly idea and the critic people fail to understand that the purpose of this railway is not to get profit but to provide the need at the trains service. Transporting for people who live in remote area is expensive and this way can be helpful for them to save money as they have the same rights with people who live inside of the city.
Second, both text and talk put forth the idea of unfarity of this situation for private transportation companies like airline. In this line of thought, the passage maintains that he intercity rails ticket is cheaper so people will prefer to use them instead of flying. However the lecture points out that the government supports all of the transportation vessels like the money it invest for airtrafic control towers and officers or the weather satellite for having a safe fly. Priveate companies can provide all these costs by it selves.
Third, both reading and the listening materials talk about how much the railways are not important in the US and this investment is a lose of money. In this regard, the passage explains that less than 1 percent of people in the united states use railways to transport in the city and they mainly use cars. The government should pay this money for improvement of highways. Concersely, the speaker states that it is less in use because it is out of date and government should even invest more on it to become update so people will use the service just as Japanies people do everyday. This city have financially supported so much on this vessel that today people use railways as a public transportation instead of cars.
