Tpo54 Task1

Both reading and lecture are about possible solutions for preventing turning The Salton Sea in California into a dead zone lake and inhospitable habitat for birds and fish and due to increasing salt concentration in water and slow rate of replacing freshwater with rain or river in comparison to evaporation rate on the lake. However, the lecture, finds all the idea implausible and presents some evidence to refute them.
First, the author argues that should salty water is pumped into desalination facilities is been heat and evaporate, this process will lead to leaving solid material remnant including salt and the steam will return to the lake as salt-free water. On the contrary, the professor highlights the fact that despite pumping water into desalination facilities clean water form solids material, it gives rise to toxic substances like selenium comprising remnant of lake water spread to air and endangers human-beings health who breath these poisonous ingredients in the air.
Second, the reading holds the view that delivering the pacific ocean's water via pipelines or canals into the lake culminate in the declining concentration of lake's salt owing to the reason that the ocean has a lower amount of salt. In contrast, the lecture dismisses the point due to the fact that constructing of pipeline that capable of bringing water from the pacific ocean for such long-distance which is approximately 1000 kilometers impose a tremendous financial pressure for government and administrator may not have sufficient resources for providing these canals.
Finally, the passage asserts that dividing the lake into the discrete segments could have resulted in increasing salinity in a small section and reducing salt concentration in the main section, and guide fresh water from rivers into this section, into the bargain. Conversely, the speaker brings up the fact that this solution is not feasible for a long time since the lake is located in a site that is vulnerable to frequent geological activity including earthquakes. In this regard, should an earthquake happen in the lake, the dividing walls will be collapsed and devastated into several segments and ruin the whole system.
