Essay topics:

In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.

The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits.

For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.

Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

Listening material

The reading and lecture are both about the alternative option of working four days per week. The author of the reading present three theories about the benefit of working four days per week with 80 percent of their normal salary. The lecturer however challenges the claims made in the article. Her position is that they are all incorrect and are disputable.
According to the reading less workdays per week will directly lead to the increase in the profit of the company. Working less days, makes the employees more energetic, which will reduce the costly error made by the employers due to high stress and work load related to the full time job. Additionally, the article mentions that company could hire more workers to increase the profit. However, this specific claim made in the article is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that, addition of extra workforce in the company will lead to increase in the overall cost. Since, new worker requires training and workspace it will undermine the cost margin gained by the reduction of the pay for four week workers.
Secondly, the author suggests that working four days per week will reduce the unemployment rate because the workload of the full time worker is required to transfer to other. Company will hire new employees; as a result there will be increase in the employment rate. The lecturer however asserts that since the addition of the addition worker is expensive, the company will start to explore other options. Such as, expectation of the equal output from worker who are both working full time and four days per week, resulting in addition of psychological pressure to employees.
Finally, the article posits that, reduction of the workdays will increase the life quality of the workers. The article contest that, they could spend their extra day off with their family and invest the time in their hobbies and passions. In, contrast the lecturer stance is four week option will reduce the job stability of the worker. On top of that, they might even be the first to loose job during the economic crisis.
