For the first time, sales of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®) Institutional Testing Program (ITP) Assessment Series have reached 2.8 million. For more than 31 years, CIEE, the world leader in international education and exchange, has partnered with the Education Testing Service (ETS®), the administrator of the series, to provide the test to institutions around the globe. CIEE has been the exclusive provider in Japan for the past 14 years. Today, under the leadership of Director of Japan Kazu Otake, CIEE’s customer base numbers more than 200 and the organization is on track to reach the next milestone of 3 million tests sold for 2014.

According to ETS, CIEE has helped make TOEFL ITP a worldwide assessment, as well as a program requirement in several educational institutions in Japan, including the oldest and top-ranked institution in the country, the University of Tokyo. In 2010, two CIEE customers, Kansai Gaidai University and Ritsumeikan University, were recognized by ETS for administering more than 10,000 TOEFL ITP tests each year, a significant usage rate that ETS attributes to CIEE’s commitment to strong client relationships.

Each year, more than 200 institutions globally—including 21 CIEE member universities—use the TOEFL ITP Assessment Series. The test is used by colleges and universities, English language programs, and other agencies throughout the world to measure students’ English language proficiency in order to place students in English language programs; to measure progress throughout the programs; to fulfill a language requirement; or to assess faculty or staff proficiency.
