The TOEFL test is the most widely accepted English-language assessment in the world. More than 8,500 institutions in more than 130 countries accept the TOEFL test.

Tom Ewing, VP, ETS talks about the plans ETS has for India and TOEFL...

What plans does ETS have for India?

The TOEFL Program continues to be extremely active in India. We will be participating in approximately 20 student fairs in the fall all around India and conducting more than 61 free TOEFL® Talks seminars across India

The sliding rupee means that fewer Indians will be going overseas. Do you think that this will affect the number of students sitting for TOEFL?

No. Although the fluctuation in the rupee may affect students studying abroad, students have the option to pay for the TOEFL test in either rupee or US dollar. The TOEFL Program saw a 7% increase in the number of TOEFL test takers in India from 2012 compared to 2011.

Are there any plans to increase the number of students being awarded the TOEFL scholarship?

For the fourth consecutive year, ETS is very pleased to award deserving students from India TOEFL Scholarships. To date, we have awarded US$240,000 in scholarship funds to students in India. We typically make scholarship announcements in November/December so stay tuned.

Are there any changes to TOEFL that are being planned?

Not at this time. We encourage test takers to join the more than 640,000 students that participate on the TOEFL page on Facebook available at to learn the latest information regarding the TOEFL test.

Could you share data of students taking GRE and TOEFL across the world in last 10 years? Could we get a break stream-wise for Indian students?

It is ETS’s policy not to provide global or country-specific volumes for TOEFL test takers. In India, volumes have fluctuated over 10 years, but interest in the GRE revised General Test has been growing as more people are choosing to submit GRE scores when applying to MBA, specialized master's, and graduate programs around the world.

More information about GRE test taker demographics and volumes by country are available in the GRE download library.

Where does India rank in terms of (TOEFL Test Taker) numbers?

India continues to rank among the top 5 countries of highest TOEFL test takers. It is our policy not to provide global or country-specific volumes for the TOEFL test.
