Ritualization happens when the animal’s behavior becomes a form of communication. The professor brings up an example to illustrate this. He states that dogs typically show their teeth to protect themselves. This behavior ritualized long time ago when the dogs started to bite the other animals by baring their teeth when they sensed danger. They did so to avoid biting their own lips. After a while, other animals recognized the bare teeth of the dog as a warning signal for keeping away from the dog’s attack. Then, the dog itself got aware of the situation that showing the teeth is enough for protection, there is no need to direct attack and this signal is identified as a possibility of attack by the other animals.
