Daniel Radcliffe may have led a charmed life until now - but it seems not even he can work his magic on U.S. customs officers.

The Harry Potter star was stopped by American border guards yesterday when he tried to cross into the country from Canada, because he had failed to properly upgrade his visa.

It was a setback that Harry Potter could have easily overcome with a simple 'Alohomora' unlocking charm - a door-opening enchantment first used by Hermione in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

But unhappily for
Radcliffe, the door stayed firmly shut after he traveled to Toronto to
attend a premiere of his movie 'What If' with co-star Zoe Kazan and to celebrate
his 25th birthday on Wednesday.

As a result, his plans to return in time for his
first-ever Comic-Con in San Diego today were scuppered, leaving him stranded in Canada until he can 'get a stamp from the U.S. embassy' in Toronto.

He was scheduled to attend the event today to promote his new movie, 'Horns', in which he plays a young man who grows horns after the mysterious death of his girlfriend.

He was due to discuss the film on a speaker's panel alongside his co-star Juno Temple and director Alexandre Aja.

'He’s stuck in Toronto with visa problems,' a source told the New York Post, explaining why he couldn't get the rubber stamp in time. '[The U.S. embassy's] computer system was down.'

According
to the paper, Radcliffe is in the process of upgrading his P-2 visa --
for foreign actors and entertainers -- to an O-1 visa for 'the
individual who possesses extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts,
education, business or athletics'.

An
O-1 grants the holder a three-year stay in the US, while the P-2 only
gives a performer residency for the time they are working on a project,
not to exceed a year.

He
finished a run of The Cripple Of Inishmaan on Broadway on Sunday, and
the Post claimed he had been approved to upgrade to the O-1.

In
order to get the O-1, he has had to persuade the U.S. Immigration
Office that no American actor could have played the role as well as him.

It comes days after the actor distanced himself from the role that made him a household name by opening up about his sex life.

The British actor claimed was 'better' than ever in the bedroom department after losing his virginity, and prefers to remain sober.

He told The Daily Star: 'I'm one of the few people who seem to have had a really good first time. It was with somebody I'd gotten to know well.

'I'm happy to say I've had a lot better sex since then.
But it wasn't as horrendously embarrassing as a lot of other people's
were, like my friend who got drunk and did it with a stranger under a
bridge.
'

Daniel quit drinking four
years ago after realising his alcohol addition had got out of control
and decided to clean up his act for the sake of his career.

'For some people sex might be better drunk. But for me and the person I'm doing it with it's much better sober', Daniel also confessed.

The Woman in Black star went public in April with girlfriend Erin Darke - who he met on the set of Kill Your Darlings in 2012 - when they went to a British grocery store in New York City together.

He previously dated production assistant Rosie Coker who he met on the set of the sixth Harry Potter flick, The Half-Blood Price.
