GRE Essay Topic - 145: To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
To state the claim that a full representation of a society could be obtained by observing only particular major cities would be an oversimplification of the issue. This is similar to the idea that a family could not necessarily be represented accurately by looking at one member, such as the mother, and a school could not be summarized by the examination of one student. While overall one cannot look to the large cities of a particular nation for proof of how an entire nation functions, cities do provide some valuable insight into the common themes of humanity shared by a society.
