GRE Issue: Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study.

The issue of Universities enforcing students to take a variety of courses which are of no relation to their field of study is a contentious one. Even though students are excessively opinionated about the fact that they are being forced to take courses which have absolutely no relation to their prospective careers and in which they have no interest, I still believe students should be required to take up a courses outside their field as it will develop skill as well as proper understanding of the subjects.

During the course of study, it is often observed that students tend to switch fields midway. Some people begin with architecture as a major and end up with graduating graphic designing by the final year. Students are often confused at what their interests are, they often end up choosing a field of study they don't like and realize their lack of interest in the subject. Therefore, if universities make it a requirement to do courses outside their field, they will develop interests and will truly understand their passions thereby easing the process of switching courses.

Also learning is a process for lifetime. These other courses of studies will make them truly appreciate people from other fields. It also helps develop skills that will help in the long run. As it is generally observed software engineers are technology obsessive, even though they have great ideas that can be used to build companies/start-ups, the lack of knowledge in the areas of entrepreneurship, marketing, business and communication will hamper them to conceptualize and implement the idea as a business. However, a course in entrepreneurship or other business related could help the engineers realize their ideas and truly understand all the facets of how to implement the idea.

Conversely the fact that "Courses outside the field of study are of no use" is false. Let us consider an example of student with the major as History, if this student lacks interest in taking up other courses, it could restrict the broadening of knowledge related to various immensely helpful subjects like technology and health. Any small issue with relation to both would cause chaos and confusion to the person. Moreover, there are possibilities of being duped or fooled with relation to small problems.

Therefore due to the above reasons like the development of skill, understanding ones true passion and becoming a truly all round person, I conclude by restating that universities should require students to take up courses outside their fields of study.
