"Twenty years ago, Dr. Field, a noted anthropologist, visited the island of Tertia and concluded from his observations that children in Tertia were reared by an entire village rather than by their own biological parents. However, my recent interviews with children living in the group of islands that includes Tertia show that these children spend much more time talking about their biological parents than about other adults in the village. This research of mine proves that Dr. Field's conclusion about Tertian village culture is invalid and thus that the observation-centered approach to studying cultures is invalid as well. The interview-centered method that my team of graduate students is currently using in Tertia will establish a much more accurate understanding of child-rearing traditions there and in other island cultures."

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

The narrator talks about a village named Tertia. According to an anthropologist, Dr. Field, who visited this very island twenty years ago, concluded that children are reared by entire village rather than by biological parents. The narrator states that Dr. Field's observations to be wrong.

The narrator states that Dr. Field's research was carried about twenty years ago. The two decades of time might have brought the difference in the society. People would have grown much busier in order to cope up with the fast ever changing world, restricting them to rear only their biological born.

It is stated that narrator's research programme is an interview-centered and not an observation-centered, so a strong question might be raised asking what sort of questions were asked in the interview. Moreover there is no statistics involved about the number of children interviewed, as number does matters in a survey. Similarly no statement is made on what age group the interview is carried as answers differ with age group.

The narrator states that the interview is conducted by a group of graduate students, but no light is shed on their expertise in the field of interviewing. Hence the statements made by the narrators group might not be legit and lack in strength to support the narrator’s statements.

So taking the above points into consideration, it can be concluded that anthropologist Dr. Field might not be wrong in his observation, through which he concluded that the children are reared by entire village rather than by their own biological parents.
