Essay topics:

Tourism is becoming increasingly important as a source of revenue to many countries but its disadvantages should not be overlooked. What are some of the problems of tourism?

Although tourism has its host of advantages, its disadvantages cannot be overlooked. In recent times, the problems associated with tourism have gotten compounded with the increase in travelers.

To begin with, is the security of tourist. To cite an example from a recent episode that happened in India, a foreign traveller who was cycling with her husband during the tour of the country was molested and raped by few thugs. Though justice has prevailed in that case after a period of time and legal action, it was disconcerting to note that adequate security is not been provided to folks who have lesser acquaintance with the visiting country. These kind of incidents happen all over the world and hence security is a very big concern. To provide sufficient security and attention to the tourists, there is an additional burden of expense on the government's budget.

The second issue that surfaces from tourism is the pollution and uncleanliness. Beautiful places and monuments get exploited owing to greed and apathy of the tourists. They simply have no regard for maintaining the beauty and sanctity of the place. Though, lot of signboards are placed requesting people to refrain from littering, the mass of folks still are callous in their attitude. This has led to manifold problems in certain historical spots.

Thirdly. there is a problem of cultural shock both for the hosts as well as the visitors. Indeed, there is an advantage of awareness and understanding of different cultures. However, it comes with its own spate of confusion and mockery. There is a general feeling amongst people that their culture is a superior one which leads to mockery. Also, there is a certain section of folks who are amused and feel confused over which culture to adopt. This creates long standing problems between different sections of people, one who is accepting the newer culture and adapting to it and another which is absolutely rigid in its resolve to stick with their own. Very few people appreciate the difference and accept it with magnanimity at heart.

Based on the reasons cited above, it is evidently clear that there are disadvantages to tourism which cannot be ignored.
