The top chart compares the number of marriages and divorces in the USA in 30 years from 1970. The second bar chart reports on proportion of adults in the USA in terms of their marital status in the same period.
Overall, there was a decrease in the number of people getting married while married couples remained the highest compared to other groups.
There were 2.5 million marriages in the year of 1970 and 1980. This then slightly reduce in the next 10 years before finally dropped to 2 million pairs celebrating their weddings. On the other hands, number of couples ending their marriages showed some fluctuations and stopped at 1 million split-up couples.
The proportion of married USA citizens remained the highest, despite its decrease of 10%, from 70% in 1970 to 60% 30 years later. Conversely, the percentage of people who were never married and those who were divorced increased during the period, ending with 20% and nearly 10% respectively. The figure for people who lost their partners dropped from 9% at the beginning to only 6% in the last year.
