Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to explain why I am late to return the books. Unfortunately, I am unable to return these books to the library in time even though I took the three books named physics, chemistry, and mathematics from the library last week.

Last week, I had a call from my younger sister’s neighbor, who lives in Central London that she had a serious accident. I had no choice except to go there because I am her only one relative in this country. However, although I thought I am able to come back within three days, I had to stay there, because she was so ill; thus, I had to reside in the hospital one week with my sister.

According to the library rules, every book should be returned within three days, otherwise a fine will be considered. After thinking my circumstances, I hope you will be waived all penalty that may have accumulated for this situation. I will be grateful if you grant this application.
