The given graph illustrates the proportion of global population in four nations, namely India, China, USA and Japan in 1950 and 2020 and make projections for 2050.

It is noticeable that the apart from India, all other countries witnessed declines in their population rates over the 1950-2002 period. In 1950, China’ s population accounted for the highest percentage of the world (approximately 23%). Having suffered a 3% drop in 52 years, China still remained the most populous nation in 2002. Simutaneouly, the trends was similar to USA and Japan. The population proportions in USA and Japan considerably decreased from 7% and nearly 5% to 5% and 3%, correspondingly. In contrast, India experienced a significant rise, making up for 13% of the world in 2002.

In addition, it is predicted that the figure for India will follow an upward trend, reaching 19%, whereas, China is projected to decrease its population percentage to 15% in 2050. Consequently, India will replace China to be the nation with the largest rate in global population. Moreover, Japan is projected to suffer a sharp drop, sinking to a new low of around 1 %. Meanwhile, the USA is expected to remain its population proportion at 5%.
