The graph and table below give information about water use worldwide and water consumption in two different countries.

The charts above show the sectoral global water consumption (agriculture, industrial use, and domestic use) and a comparison of water usage in Brazil and the Republic of Congo.

It is clear that global water consumption increase significantly from 1900 to 2000 with agriculture being the largest proportion of water used. It is also obvious that Brazil has a higher consumption of water compared to the Republic of Congo.

In 1900, agriculture accounted for around 500 Km3 water usage while water consumption of industrial and domestic use only has a small amount of the total consumption. By 2000, agriculture still remains as the largest sector for water consumption followed by industrial and domestic sector, respectively.

In 2000, Brazil has a population of 176 million, 30 times larger than Congo with a population of 5.2 million. Brazil and Congo’s water consumption per person is 359m2 and 8m2, respectively. The higher water consumption per person ratio can be explained from the larger irrigated land of Brazil, being 265 larger than Congo.
