The line graph gives information about the changes in the percentage of elder people who are at the age of 65 and above in three countries namely the USA, Sweden and Japan from 1940 to an expected proportion in 2040.
Overall, it can be seen that three countries showing increase in older population even though Japan showed a reduction initially.
In 1940, around 10 per cent of the US population was people who aged 65 or above,which was the highest population than other two countries, while Japan had around 7 % and it holded the second position. From 1940 to 2000, both the countries followed a similar trend of significant increase in old age population and reached at 15% and 14% respectively. Now, Sweden overcomes the USA at around 20% which is 5% higher than the USA and it is expected that by 2014 the USA and Sweden have 25% and 25% of old people who aged 65 or above.
However, Japan followed a different trend when compared with the other two countries. In 1940, there was 5% of elderly population aged 65 or above and it remained same in 2000 even though there was slight reduction in between. After 2000, Japan showed a pattern of increase and reached at around 8% now. By 2040,Japan's old age population rate will overcome the other two countries at more than a quarter.
