The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant

The chart compares the numbers of products delivered by four different means of transport over the period of 28 years in the UK.

Overall, it can be seen clearly that the transportation on road, water and pipeline increased over the years while rail transport became less common. Delivering goods by road had always been the most popular choice.

In 1974, goods transported in the UK by road, water and pipeline were 70, 39 and 5 million (m) tonnes respectively. 1980 saw a big improvement in water (58m) and pipeline (18m) transports while the number of goods transported by road remained the mostly the same. 22 years later, in 2002, road, water and pipeline transports all significantly increased with 99m, 63m and 21m tonnes of goods were delivered.

On the other hand, rail transport stayed steady at around 40m tonnes between 1974 and 1978. Then it went down gradually over the next few years before increasing again in 1986. The rail transport didn't see much significant improvement in the next years. The number of goods transported stood at 41m tonnes in 2002, which was a marginal increase in comparison to 28 years ago.
