Question: Some students prefer classes with open discussions between the professor and students and almost no lectures. Other students prefer classes with lectures and almost no discussions. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

The time in university is one of the most important periods in our lives because this will help us to learn a new things and it prepares us for our future career. Some people prefer open discussion between students and professor and almost no lectures. Others may disagree. In my view, classes with open discussions and almost no lectures are beneficial for two important reasons.

First, classes with open discussions between students and professor are important in building social interaction between students. In other words, this will help students to understand the material of the subject and broaden their thinking. For example, when I was in university, we had a history class. This class was almost a discussion between students and professor and no lecture. At the beginning, I thought it was a disadvantage, but this was not true. One day, we were discussing the Muslim traditions. My friend, Ali, was there and he was born in Turkey, he explains to us the Muslim customs, traditions and different religion. For example, I understand why they are prohibited to eat pork. This experience taught me that, classes with open discussions and nearly no lecture are much more beneficial for the students.

Second, classes with open discussions play a fundamental role in good thinking and speaking abilities. In order to be an independent thinker and speaker, you should participated in open discussions because these classes are motivate you to develop a new ideas and improve your speaking abilities. For instance, before these history classes where open discussions are the focus of the class, I was afraid of speaking in front of big group of people. During these classes, we were forced to participate in a discussions in order to get a good score in the final exam. As a result of that I started to overcame my anxiety and participated in the discussion. Finally, I realized that this was great idea and started to develop my independent way of thinking. And also, this helps me a lot in becoming a good speaker. As you can see, this classes that is mainly open discussions between students and professor are imperative for student to become an independent speaker and thinker.

All in all, though some may oppose my opinion, classes with open discussion and almost no lectures are beneficial for students. Not only it will help them to develop a social interaction with others, but also it develops their thinking and speaking skills. That is why every university should offer such classes.
