jet stream

Essay topics:

jet stream

The information in the reading passage is about Jet stream which is a mass of wind at about 20,000 feet in troposphere and usually, flows from west to east with the average speed of 190 miles per hour. The professor in the lecture provides some examples about this kind of wind.

According to the reading passage, the main reason of flowing jet stream is different temperature. So, in the winter because of more difference between the temperature of troposphere and the surface the jet stream would be stronger. Two main jet stream between the equator and the North Pole are the subtropical and the polar jet stream that are produced because of difference temperature.

In the listening passage the professor states that because the jet stream separates cold weather in north from warm weather in south, is called Polar jet stream. In addition he explains how air lines are affected by jet streams, giving an example of how a trip from Los Angeles to New York would be shorter than the opposite direction because the latter is against the jet stream. Flying against this stream causes more consuming of fuel as well and the airplane will be experienced more turbulence. The professor also claims that the weather and the storms are influenced by jet streams.
