Essay topics:

Recently, there has been a debate about a measure called "salvage logging" to help the forest recovery after fire and disaster. Salvage logging means removal of dead trees after disasters and fire.

The author in the reading passage supports this approach, he believes that is really helpful for rapid recovery of forests. While the professor in the lecture holds another believe and he thinks that salvage logging would be so harmful to nature and it is not necessary as the author assume.
First of all, the professor refutes the idea of the author that removing of dead tree would give more space for new trees to grow in the same area. Despite that, removing the tree would remove the important nutritions that the soil may get from the decompositions of dead trees, which is really important for the soil and so helpful for the new trees to grow. So, the removal of the tree might lead to further damage to this area.
Second, the lecture maintains an opposite side of view regarding the bad impact of the decompositions of dead trees on forests. However, this decompositions material would be a good habitat for the insects like spruce bark beetle, actually, this kind of insects are already living there for a long time and they don't have bad influences on the forest. On the other hand, the decomposing trees would be a great habitat for birds as well, which in turn, have a very good influence on the forest in the long run. By this point, the professor successfully argues the second benefit of the salvage logging that the author mentioned in the text.
Finally, the speaker completely disagrees with the author point about the economic advantage of this approach, he explains that by saying, the wood that has gotten from the damaged area would not last for a long time, in other words, it is restricted resource of wood. In addition, to get this wood to the industries, they have to use helicopters and it is really expensive way of transportations, also the jobs opportunities that the salvage logging would provide, they would be temporary jobs and actually attracted the foreign experts, not to the local workers.
