The reading passage argues that the ecocertification (the certificate of meeting high ecological standards by conserving resources and recycling materials) wouldn't attract consumers. The lecturer, however, refutes these arguments due to the following reasons.
First, people are able to distinguish between advertisements that are certified by independent organizations with international reputations and the ones in which companies advertise their own products. So, on the contrary to the reading passage, advertisements labeled "new" or "improved" will not attract much attention.
Second, when the prices are not much different (less than 5% different in the case of ecocertificated products), people will consider other virtues of the products in order to determine which product to buy. This contradics with the statement of the reading passage that the price is consumers' priority in buying products.
Third, the fact that American wood companies do not export their products, is not a compelling argument to consider the international ecocertification useless. Companies inside America are rivals of the foreign companies, so they will benefit from providing their products with higher quality environmentally friendly woods. This fact is another contradiction between the reading passage and the lecture.
