In term of whether the American companies should produce the ecocertified woods, the reading and listening are contradictory to each other.
First of all, the writer makes the point that the people in the US don’t trust the advertising so that they will not pay attention to the ecocertification label. However, the professor demonstrates a different idea that in fact the American people trust the advertising made by the independent organization. Therefore, they are likely to buy the ecocertified wood.
What’s more, contrary to the belief in the reading passage that Americans will not buy the ecocertified wood which is more expensive than the normal wood, the lecturer says that the consumers care about the price only when it has a big difference between two competing goods. However, when the price gap is small, people tend to be motivated by other factors like protecting environment.
Finally, the author states that it makes no sense for American companies to pursue ecocertification when they market most of their products in their own country. In contrast, the speaker refutes that, if the American companies do not do this, the foreign companies which produce the ecocertified wood will occupy the US market.
