The memoir written by Chevalier has lead to debates on whether or not he has been honest in his writing. The reading authors believe that he is more likely to have been dishonest about some events in order to make his life seem more exciting. The lecturer, however, refutes the arguments presented in the reading passage due to the following reasons.

First, the fact that he had borrowed money, is by no means a good reason to believe that Chevalier had not been wealthy; He could have borrowed money from the merchant for a short amount of time until he received his orders.

Second, there is compelling evidence that Chevalier has written about the conversations he had, using his detailed notes which he used to take after each conversation.

Third, having politically well-connected friends couldn't help Chevalier run away from prison, inasmuch as, there were prisoners at the same time who had more friends than Chevalier did, so, if bribing was possible, they had more chances to escape the prison; But none of them did. Moreover, the history records show that the prison's ceiling needed to be repaired after Chevalier's escape_ that strengthens the possibility that the memo is accurate.

To sum up, even though the lecturer acknowledges that no memo can be thoroughly accurate, she contends that the arguments of the reading are wrong.
