The article and the lecture are both about whether or not Chevalier's memoir is genuine. The author is of the opinion that the Chevalier invented many events in the memoir to make his life seem exciting and glamorous than it really was. To begin with, the author states that though Chevalier claimed to be a man of affluence, he borrowed some considerable amount of money from a Swiss merchant during parties and gambling. The point is challenged by the professor. She asserts that Chevalier was indeed very rich and owned various properties as well. Furthermore, she points out that converting these assets into cash requires time and that may be the reason Chevalier took a loan from those native merchants.
In addition, the author supports the critic's disbelief towards accuracy of conversations between Chevalier and famous writer Voltaire. He argues that it is impossible to delineate exact phrases from those conversations as the memoir was written years after the discussion took place. However, the professor rebuts this argument. She states that the Chevalier used to take notes at night over conversations he had in the entire day. She even notes that he used to preserve those notes for years and then refer them while writing memoirs.
Finally, the author questions the Chevalier's escape from a prison in Venice. He further mentions that the Chevalier had number of political contacts in the city with the help of whom he must have bribed the jailers to free him. The professor, on the other hand, suggests that there were other prisoners too, who had more powerful friends than the writer, so why didn't they used the same technique to free themselves. Moreover, she asserts that government documents do show evidences that the ceiling of the Chevalier's prison needed repair. And why would a ceiling need a repair if ever the writer bribed the jailers?
