TPO 27 integrated writing : Little Ice Age

Both the reading and the passage discuss the causes of the little ice age that the last one has occurred in 1350 until 1900 CE. The passage provides three theories for that and explains them by some reasons. On the other hand, the professor casts doubt on all of them and believes that these theories are out of date.

The first theory that the author explains is about the disruption of ocean current. The author believes that melting fresh water that comes from the polar glacier causes a disruption in ocean current and the little ice age appears. However, the professor in the lecture challenges this assertion and illustrates that these fresh waters affect north Europe, but the little ice age had occurred in southern parts like Newzeland, too. Hence, the disruption of the gulf stream by fresh waters is not the main cause of the little ice age.
Second, the author believes that volcanic eruption is the other case of the little ice age. He explains that dark clouds of the volcanoes block the sunlight and cool the earth. In contrast, the lecture states that the volcanoes effects should have been obvious in the darkness of the sky or changing the color of the snow to gray. However, none of them had occurred in little ice age, hence this is not the main cause of the ice age.

Finally, the author makes a point about human activity and states that preparing land for agriculture, provide a suitable land for growing trees and after a few years there grow a lot of trees. This process decrease the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and cool the earth. On the contrary, the professor states that this assertion is not valid because these days the human population increased and trees are cutting quickly. Hence, these days jungles an important effect on global warming and little ice ages.
