The reading and the lecture are discussing the lines that are found around the skeleton of a type of dinosaur found in some fossils. The reading goes against the idea that these lines represent feathers, while the lecturer supports the possibility that these lines represents feathers and she refutes all the claims in the reading. The lecturer provides three evidences to support her argument.

First, the reading suggests that these lines could have been formed after the death, then the decomposition of the dinosaurs, and they are just lines formed in the volcanic ash. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts this claim by stating that the feathers of the other animals founds in the fossils in the same areas are well preserved and it they did not turn into lines. As a result, that is a vivid evidence that these lines were part of the body of the dinosaurs and likely to be feathers.
Second, the reading mentions that dinosaurs usually had frills around their body, therefore, these lines is possibly are just frills, not feathers. However, the lecturer argues against this claim by stating that there is a major difference between the chemical composition of frills and feathers. The feathers contain beta-carotene, whereas the frills do not contain this element. These lines contain beta-carotene. Hence, these lines are certainly not frills, and they are likely to be feathers.

Third, the reading claims that these lines are not part of the skeleton of the animal, so they have no function. The lecturer, on the other hand, contends this claim by saying that the feathers may have been used as in display function. He supported his idea by giving example about the peacock that used its tail during the courtship to attract the female. Therefore, these feathers could have been used in other function rather than flying.
