TPO-31 - Integrated Writing Task A fossil skeleton of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx, preserved in volcanic ash, was discovered in Liaoning, China, in 1996. Interestingly, the fossil included a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones. Some

Although the author provides three main reasons to support the fact that Sinosauropteryx, a fossil of a dinosaur found in China did not have any feathers, the professor contradicts these ideas and brings up three counter points to refute them all.

First, the author argues that the fossil preserved in volcanic ash has been degraded and it resulted misinterpreting of the lines on the fossil which are supposed to be its feather. However, the professor takes the view that the decomposition of other animal's fossils preserved in volcanic ash indicates their structure correctly. Thus, it leads this result that the Sinosauropteryx ' s fossil are valid enough to represent the possible feather.

Second, the author states that the scholars cannot surely state that these parts of dinasaur's structure are their feathers due to the fact that they have some frills, a fan-shaped lines on their bodies. On the contrary, the professor holds the view that scientists have investigated the chemical differences between feathers and thrills which show that feathers structure contain a kind of protein that have been found in the Sinosauropteryx's fossil. So, the presence of protein distinguishes that they are not thrills.

Third, the author claims that their functions are not only for flying but also fot thermoregulation which these functions are not represented on their bodies due to the fact that lines in fossils are placed on their backbones and tails. However, the professor believes that their feathers had other functions such as displacing function. For example some kind of birds use their feathers for mating. In addition, it has been discovered recently that their feathers were colorful which indicate that they have been used for displacing activities, another kind of feather function.
