TPO-34 - Integrated Writing Task A huge marine mammal known as Steller’s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first Europeans to see

Both the reading and the lecture discuss three theories about the main causes of Steller's sea cow extinction. While the author claims that these theories contribute to the main causes of this event, the professor disagrees and provides some pieces of evidence to state that these theories would not be the major reason of this phenomenon.

First, the reading says that over hunting of the sea cows by native Siberian people could be the key factor of the extinction of this animal. However, the lecturer disagrees. According to the lecturer, each sea cow was so big so that it could supply enough food resource for the whole village for a long period of time, so it was necessary for the residents to kill a large number of this animal to gain sufficient food supply.

Second, according to the reading passage, some ecosystem changes occurred near Beriling Island which resulted in the reduction of kelp, which was the main food of sea cow. As a result, sea cows encountered with the deficient food supply and subsequently their population decreased because of lack of food. Again, the lecturer disproves this point. He points out that if that change in environment was too severe that it could led to the destruction of kelp plant, we must have other evidences of the extinction of other marine animals such as whales. However, there is not any evidence of such extinction; therefore, this hypothesis is not credited either.

Third, the reading passage points out that the sea cows might be haunted by fur traders in order to obtain their fur. It refers to the chronological evidences that shows that the number of sea cows gradually diminished after the settlement of these trader. Conversely, the professor rejects this hypothesis and he argues that it seems that something caused the reduction of sea cows long before the time when fur traders inhabit on the island because there are some evidences that indicate that there was a small number of sea cows remained when the traders first came to the island.
