TPO-45 - Integrated Writing Task Any student of paleontology will be struck by the fact that a great many animals of the past were considerably larger than they are today. This holds true for species ranging from dinosaurs to most mammals. Just why they w

The reading passage contends that there are three points about the explanation why a great many animals of the past were considerably larger than they are today. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the validity of the point in the reading passage that the early earth’s greater supply of oxygen resulted in the large size of the animals in the past. This is attributed to the fact that volcanic activities were actively happened with spreading poisonous gases on the air. It made them difficult to survive and breathe. And the suggestion held by some biologists that oxygen-rich environment is also wrong. Thus, the reading passage’s first point is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer casts doubt on the point made by the reading passage that all species have been provided plenty of nutrients by the abundant plant life on the early earth. This is because even it is true that the abundant plant existed in the past, nutrients from the plant life was not plentiful. According to the research from fossil and ancient plant life, they would have scarce nutrient for providing plenty of nutrients. And their atmosphere also was contaminated. Consequently, the reading passage’s second point is contradicted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the point made in the reading passage that a great many animals of the past was stimulated their growth by the early earth’s warm climate, which is addressed by some researchers. It is obvious that their huge bodies were disadvantages for themselves. This is because animals’ larger bodies require more food than smaller one, which makes the body temperature is raised. In order to maintain their temperature, they had to regulate body temperature by cooling themselves immediately. It was difficult for animals with huge bodies to reduce their temperature. As a result, with such reasoning, the reading passage’s last point is refuted.
